A weakness of the levator muscle.
In some cases the consultation reveals, in addition to the aesthetically troubling slackening of the lids, a weakness of the levator muscle — a so-called ptosis.
Ptosis means a congenital or acquired weakness of the muscle that lifts the eyelid. The upper lid “hangs” and can only be raised partially. Depending on how pronounced it is, it covers the pupil partially or, in rare cases, almost completely. The patient is affected by the restriction of the field of vision, and from an aesthetic point of view the gaze looks tired.
The correction brings well-being.
But correcting drooping lids brings far more than a fresh appearance: it brings well-being. Because the procedure creates a more comfortable opening of the eyes.
In addition, the horizontal forehead lines often become less pronounced, because the forehead muscle no longer has to tense in order to open the eye. And that not only feels good, it also looks fantastic.

The correction is carried out through the same access route as an upper eyelid lift. In addition the levator muscle is shortened or fixed at the correct position of the lid, in order to ensure that the lid opens sufficiently.

How do I know it is ptosis and not a hooded eyelid?
A simple self-test: lift the excess skin of the upper lid with your finger. If the lid margin still sits low over the pupil, that points to ptosis — the lid itself is drooping, not just the skin above it. We make the definitive diagnosis during the examination.
Can ptosis affect vision?
Yes. When the lid margin extends into the pupil, it restricts the upper field of vision. Many of those affected compensate unconsciously by permanently raising their brows — which in turn can cause head and neck tension.
Am I awake during the operation?
Yes, and in ptosis surgery that is actually important: under local anaesthetic we can have you open your eyes during the procedure and fine-tune the lid height directly on the result — for the most symmetrical outcome possible.
Does health insurance pay for the ptosis operation?
