Correcting hooded eyelids

Regaining a lively and fresh appearance.

The overall impression, and often the first impression too, suffers from the excess skin on the upper lid, which can fold over the lashes. No matter how many tricks and creams you use — once hooded eyelids are there, they unfortunately do not go away again. Confidence suffers, and sometimes even the field of vision of those affected is impaired. Hooded eyelids can be corrected with a tiny surgical procedure.

A fresher appearance

A fresher appearance after hooded eyelid correction.

Hooded eyelids are among the typical signs of ageing and appear earlier in some people and later in others. Most patients are over forty when they decide on upper eyelid surgery. At the Kuzbari Centre we can remedy the problem with a small surgical procedure (blepharoplasty). The upper lid is tightened and patients regain a generally fresher, younger appearance and an alert gaze.

Why correct hooded eyelids?

An open gaze gives a special presence.

The eyes are a particularly striking feature in a person's face. They can often be decisive for the overall impression and can make us appear either tired and drained or fresh and full of energy. An open gaze gives us a special presence that can be enormously important not only in everyday life but at work too. Many women and men lose that presence with age, when the tissue in the upper lid region slackens and hooded eyelids form.

Why correct hooded eyelids — Kuzbari Centre Vienna
Bespoke eyelid surgery

Bespoke eyelid surgery at Kuzbari.

Besides the visual and social advantage of a fresh and young appearance that can be achieved by correcting drooping lids, a general sense of well-being often follows too. Because with extremely pronounced hooded eyelids the vision of those affected is often impaired as well. Eyelid surgery at the Kuzbari Centre makes opening the eyes easier and more comfortable. Because every patient is unique, there is no mass production with us but fine bespoke work, in which each person and their concerns are addressed individually.

The day of the operation

We take the time it needs.

Because perfectionism is a high priority at the Kuzbari Centre, eyelid surgery takes between 1 and 4.5 hours. Our surgeons adapt the method to the individual circumstances and therefore take the time it needs to achieve the best possible final result and maximum patient satisfaction.

In an upper eyelid lift the excess skin, the protruding fat and, where necessary, slackened muscle tissue are removed. The correction can be carried out on an outpatient basis, with the region anaesthetised locally. A precise incision in the natural eyelid crease will barely be visible soon after the operation. Exertion should be avoided immediately after the procedure; after two to three weeks you are fully presentable again.

Hooded eyelid correction or brow lift?

The upper lid itself is not always the cause: sometimes a dropped brow makes the lid look heavy. The video explains what makes sense when.

Result

The result of hooded eyelid correction.

The result of the eyelid lift is a fresh and younger appearance. It shows after about 2–3 months. With the right surgical technique the natural shape of the eyes is preserved. If the operation has been done well, all people should notice afterwards is the fresher, more radiant gaze, because there is no change of character.

Naturalness through expertise

What matters in eyelid surgery

Many people have well-founded reservations about facial surgery, because there are repeated examples of unnatural, mask-like faces. In the video Dr Christoph Grill explains what matters in eyelid surgery, what the risks are and how to arrive at a natural result.

  • 1. Consultation

    1. Consultation

Everything begins with a consultation lasting about an hour. You get to know us and already receive important information about the possible treatment options. You also find out what the treatment costs and how long it takes.

    2. The procedure

In an upper eyelid lift the excess skin, the protruding fat and, where necessary, slackened muscle tissue are removed. The correction can be carried out on an outpatient basis. The region is anaesthetised locally, then follows a precisely placed incision in the natural eyelid crease and — depending on the extent of the slackened skin — beyond the outer corner of the lid as well.

    3. The result

Physical exertion should be avoided after the procedure. Cooling the eyes eases the swelling. After about 2 to 3 weeks you are presentable again and all that remains visible is a fine scar in the natural eyelid crease, which usually becomes invisible over time.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about hooded eyelid correction

What are hooded eyelids and how do they arise?

Hooded eyelids are excess folds of skin on the upper lid, caused by ageing, genetic predisposition or slackening skin. At the Kuzbari Centre we remove them precisely, to promote a youthful appearance.

How long does the procedure to remove hooded eyelids take?

Depending on the findings and the extent, we take from one to several hours for the outpatient procedure — there are no operations on the hour with us. Our surgeons use gentle techniques for a quick recovery.

When can I go back to work after hooded eyelid removal?

Most patients can return to work after 5–7 days, provided they are not carrying out physically demanding activities. We provide comprehensive aftercare to make the return to everyday life easier.

Are the results of hooded eyelid removal visible immediately?

The first results are already apparent after 2–3 weeks, once the swelling has subsided. The final outcome shows after about 2–3 months, once the body has fully recovered.

What risks are there in removing hooded eyelids?

Risks such as swelling or temporary dryness of the eyes are rare and are reduced further by the expertise of our surgeons and the most modern technology.

Can I wear contact lenses after the operation?

Contact lenses should be avoided for 1–2 weeks after the operation, so as not to impair healing. Our doctors will advise you on suitable alternatives.

Hooded eyelids or ptosis — which do I have?

With a hooded eyelid, excess skin hangs over the lid margin but the lid itself sits correctly. With ptosis the upper lid itself droops, because the levator muscle has weakened. The distinction matters because it determines the surgical method — at the first appointment we establish it with a few simple checks.

Can hooded eyelids be removed without an operation?

Creams and massage cannot make hanging skin recede. With mild findings a brow lift with Botox creates one or two millimetres of room, and laser or plasma treatments tighten the skin slightly. With pronounced hooded eyelids there is no way around surgical correction — it is the only method with a clear result lasting many years.

Will my eyes look different after the operation?

They will look the way they used to — that is the core of what we set out to do. We take our bearings from photos of you as a young adult and restore the state your eyes once had. An “operated” look comes from removing too much skin, and that is exactly what we avoid.

Does health insurance pay for the hooded eyelid operation?

We are a private centre — coverage by statutory health insurance is not provided for with us. What distinguishes the private route is set out on our page Private or health insurance?.

How long does it take until the scar is invisible?

The scar lies in the natural eyelid crease and is hidden from the start when the eye is open. At first it is visible as a fine red line, fades over three to six months and afterwards is barely detectable even with the eye closed.

Can hooded eyelids come back after the operation?

The result usually lasts ten years and longer. The skin naturally goes on ageing — but it starts again from zero, not from the original findings. Most patients never need a second correction.
