The upper lids look swollen and their excess skin folds over the lashes, creating the impression of “hooded eyelids”. When the skin hangs over the lid margin, it can even restrict the field of vision.

These signs of ageing on the lids appear earlier in some people than in others, but most of those affected are over forty. With such age-related changes to the eyelids, the slackened lid tissue can be tightened with a surgical procedure (blepharoplasty).

Since — leaving identical twins aside — no two people look exactly the same, and since patients' aesthetic wishes differ individually, there cannot and should not be any routine operations. Unfortunately, in aesthetic medicine too, operations are often carried out on the hour. The work runs like a production line, and each patient is granted only a predetermined operating time. That is not a quality criterion, because it means the individual needs and requirements of patients are not addressed in any way. You cannot impose one technique on every patient.

Our surgeons do everything they can to achieve the very best result. And that is precisely why we need between 1 and 4.5 hours for eyelid surgery: we take the time each procedure requires. Not only in the preparation, but in the execution too. It may well be claimed that a similar result can be achieved in 15 minutes. We do not believe it.

The most common causes of an unnatural result are skin that has been tightened too much, the removal of too much fatty tissue, incorrect placement of the scars and a failure to correct the age-related loss of volume around the eyes. These shortcomings leave the typical hallmarks of a poor upper eyelid lift.

All of that is avoidable with good planning and professional surgical technique. After a good upper eyelid lift you do not look operated on or pulled tight, but younger, fresher and more beautiful. The people around you will probably notice the positive change, but will not know what caused it.

Many people believe that lifting the eyebrows leads to a more youthful appearance. But that is not always true. Studies show that eyebrows sometimes rise with age — and sometimes fall. Only rarely does the whole eyebrow drop. That is why we ask our patients always to bring photos of themselves as young adults. Using those we can identify the changes and so rejuvenate without changing.

The importance of the surgeon's experience shows in the handling of the fatty tissue: the slackened, excess skin is removed and the muscle tissue beneath it is tightened. The protruding fatty tissue is either reduced or repositioned so that a harmonious transition between the lid and cheek region is achieved. Remove too much fatty tissue and the eyes look hollow and tired. Remove too little and you do not achieve the best possible result.
